The Difference of Focus
Matthew 15:2–3 (KJV)
Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
Notice the difference of focus. The scribes and Pharisees concerned themselves with transgressions against their traditions; Jesus was concerned about transgressions against the commandment of God.
That they were the scribes and Pharisees offers a huge clue for personal application. These were the religious folks of Israel. These were the most zealous in their faith. I know some would object to being likened to them. The objection ought to be resisted. We all have a bit of the Pharisee in us.
Here is the cause of many of the problems we have in churches today. The most zealous members of the church are typically zealous of the wrong things. They are zealous over the traditions of men rather than the commandment of God.
To be sure, tradition has its place. It is important. But when we focus on that rather than on the commandment of God, we get out of balance, and we can be the cause of terrible pain in our church’s body.
The key to true unity is to focus on the commandment of God. Once that becomes our heartbeat, we can be faithful, properly, to our church traditions.
