My recommendations in “hard to live” city

Intro

My last visit was Apr 2018 for Fintech conference.

(Y Combinator interview trip in Dec 2018 was only for 3days)

This time we spent 2weeks in SanFrancisco and Bay Area.

Here are my tips about how to optimize the life in SF.

Still housing crisis and homelessness are big problems.

Actually, I could meet much more homeless people than 1year ago.

This list can tell you how to spend your tech life better in such an environment.

Hotel

• Cable car hotel in Nob Hill is cheap and good location. Next to Trader’s Joe. Not Cable car court hotel which ended to provide the hotel service.
• Cheap hotels in Marina and Fillmore area. We need to research more. Chances are cheap motels near Golden Gate Bridge. Marina is peaceful are with Apple Store and good restaurants. These motels are not in the internet, I believe. I need to check Cow Hollow Motor Inn and Startup Basecamp in Marina.
• Japan Town: Hotel Kabuki is expensive but Kimpton Buchanan Hotel can be reasonable.
• SOMA: Pickwick Hotel and Hampton Inn by Hilton can be reasonable.
• Overall, we should cross-search hotel booking sites and check unlisted motels too.
• Airbnb: Funny thing is we have Airbnb HQ in SF but Airbnb hosts are not active in SF due to the strict law.
• Cafe and Bar: We can have a coffee and alcohol at luxury hotels after a reasonable price dinner and lunch. Meaning don’s eat at luxury hotels.. We always check Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Mariott and W Hotel in each city in order to have “just one drink with a nice aroma and live music”. In SOMA, we have Park Central hotel with nice lobby cafe and bar.
• The top bar at Intercontinental in Nob Hill is very nice. Salesforce tower view is fantastic. We should take VIP clients in the future. They have live jazz music.
• Bay bridge view in Hoel Vitale near Ferry building is fantastic. It is like a hidden nice hotel.

Co-Working Space

• The lobby cafes at above luxury hotels are nice. My favorite is Holiday Inn Golden Gate lobby cafe.
• The point cafe at Pinterest HQ in SOMA is very nice. $2 for coffee. You can buy Pinterest items.
• COVO in mission looked nice.
• WeWork is everywhere and we can buy a global pass with many different plans. Some are not too crowded and recommendable.
• SF city made lots of “Public Open Spaces” with free tables and some cafe facility like Starbucks and Peet’s coffee. SF city is trying to save “Co-Working refugees” maybe.. Best ones are 101 2nd Street building and Salesforce Tower(= in sub entrance with Starbucks in 5th floor) in Mission
• We have 9 Blue Bottle cafe in SF. As you know their coffee is very nice.

Food

• LIMON in Mission is very very nice. We loved it. Peruvian food.
• Nope near Hait Ashbely is very nice and open until midnight. A modern American cuisine.
• Ippudo Ramen in Union Square is very nice but sometimes crowded.
• Dosa in Fillmore and Mission are very nice Indian.
• Maimai cafe in Nob Hill serves very good breakfast
• Tacolicious near Chinatown and Mission are very nice Mexican food.
• Bun Mee is nice Vietnamese sandwitch in Fillmore st.
• Woodhouse is nice seafood restaurant with very good clam chowder in many places.
• Tsukiji-no-Donmono 築地の丼もの is nice Japanese seafood bowl takeaway in SOMA.
• Luke’s lobster looks nice in many places.

Feeling the future

• At Tesla showroom in Nob Hill, you can try self-driving in public road if you have US driver license. Or you can ask staff to drive. (If you intend to buy it in future)
• Autodesk gallery in 1 Market st 2F has very beautiful 3D modeling samples like architecture, automotive, sneakers, animations, apparels etc.

• SF has 2 or 3 AmazonGo. Lots of tourist are visiting. You can find soooo many sensors in the ceiling.

• Dropbox in SOMA. If you know someone inside, you can enjoy the best lunch in SF. They hire Micheline star restaurant chefs to make employees happy..

• Brand new Apple city in Cupertino is huuuuuge. They have very nice visitor center with gift shop and cafe.

• Facebook HQ in Menlo Park. You can take a famous up vote sign pic at 1 Hacker way. Buildings are like cute village. If you know insider, you can have lunch.

• Googleplex in Moutain View. Huuuuuge. There are 100 Google buildings in MV and 11 in SF.

• Intel HQ and museum near San Jose and Cupertino. You can know Mr.Moore in Moore’s law is one of the founders of Intel..

• Computer History Museum in Moutain View. Staffs are sooo friendly. I wanted to visit NASA museum next door.

• Salesforce Tower in SOMA. If you know insider, you can go up to 61st floor and look around Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatlaz etc in 1 view. Just amazing. Lots of Salesforce staffs are having lunch there with great view.

• E-Scooters : I could not try but I should next time.

EXPO

• Moscone convention center is very big in SOMA. We should keep checking what is happening there even if it is different topic’s EXPO.

Lyft vs Uber (Mobility as a Service war)

• Left car is everywhere in SF. Especially in the SF airport, soooo many people are waiting for Lyft pickup because it is the cheapest. I paid $28–38 from SFO to SF downtown. Back in 2015, I was paying $80 to Uber van…. I will never take BART train.. I talked with every single Lyft driver in this trip. You can hear sooo many interesting stories.
• Lyft’s commission rate is higher. This is the reason Lyft is so strong in SF. In Boston, Uber was stronger.
• Interior designer who does 50% Left and 50% designer because designer project is always project based. This totally makes sense.
• Very rich real estate agent female CEO who does Lyft driver as a hobby. She was so nice..
• Many drivers do Lyft and Uber together. One of them does Lyft for 10hours as max and does Uber for extra hours. Another one uses Uber’s leased car for Lyft business..
• Uber provides Toyota car for leasing. Now you do not have to buy a car to start driver business. It costs something around $500/mo. After 3–4 years, drivers need to pay double but they don’t have to prepare the cash in advance to buy a car. It makes sense.
• If Lyft became half price from present cost, people in SF will stop using BART/bus/rental car. That will solve traffic jam problem completely. People do not have to buy a car.

Apartment

• I visited my friend house in Nob Hill with gorgeous view and private library and gyms. He pays only $5000/mo for this mansion. He lives there with wife and 1 kid. This is very reasonable price.
• When searching, we should not give up after major listing websites. We should keep searching a traditional offline real estate agent too. They have offline listing info. Sometimes offline info wins over online info. It is like a Facebook post info can not be searched by Google. They are two different world.
• My Lyft driver said finding flatshare mate in Craigslist works. It will cost around $1000–1500/mo when sharing. You can live in downtown SF.
• Researching by walking around could work better than online search. Don’t trust internet 100%. There is always back door in any business.
