GVDS Journal #1: And so it begins…

This is actually a decent metaphor for what it’s like the week before the event begins. 🤪

On the first planning day for the Global Virtual Design Sprint (where I start outlining the work that needs to be done by the time the event starts), I was coming around to the distinct possibility that I would have to re-write both the Mural templates and learning materials from scratch.

Normally I would leverage the work that had been done in the past for previous events to save some time. However, with a new ‘Virtual Facilitator’ feature I had promised at the launch of the event last week, there wasn’t going to be an easy route. I had to put in the work… all of it.

So here’s what I’m thinking.

There are going to be four proposed tracks for learning in the GVDS. Each of these tracks align with the aptitude of the participant and help different levels of facilitators with guiding their teams. These would be:

  • Beginner — Follows the roadmaps outlined by both Jake Knapp and Richard Banfield. All activities would follow the usual script.
  • Experienced — Follows the virtual design sprint process, updated and promoted with every Global Virtual Design Sprint.
  • Advanced — Follows a process that I personally recommend, comparing and contrasting how different activities and steps are done.
  • Expert — Showcases how ‘Featured Facilitators’ do their particular method/approach to Sprints and/or individual activities within the greater methodology.

Each of these would have their separate set of templates, instructional videos and documentation. I’m learning towards Podia as a host, allowing for easy access to everything needed to run one of these four options.

Participants would also be able to swap out different exercises for their team, utilize a ‘online budget’ to keep Zoom and Mural overuse under control, and reference all learning materials during the actual virtual design sprint.

More to explain in my next journal entry. :)
