This week, Dallas faced severe weather — including thunderstorms, flooding, and winds up to 80 miles per hour — resulting in widespread disruptions and leaving many residents without power for several days. The weather conditions put this city to the test, but Dallas’ tireless response to help our residents return to normalcy has demonstrated the strength and resilience of this great city.

Over the weekend, the city’s debris collection team worked hard to completely clear major roadways of fallen trees and other storm debris. This week, Dallas’ Department of Sanitation Services will begin collecting brush and bulky items from private residences. Due to the large volume of storm debris scattered throughout the city, the Department of Sanitation Services is quickly expanding its operations, contracting additional crews to speed up debris collection efforts.

The city asks any residents with debris on their private property to please stack it adjacent to the street for collection, as early placement restrictions have been waived. Please hold or self-haul any brush and bulky items unrelated to the storm until all storm debris has been collected to help the city return to a normal brush and bulky collection schedule as efficiently as possible.

For additional aid, including help with downed trees, please call 311 for assistance or request a service online.

What to do if you don’t have power

Rest assured, the city is collaborating closely with Oncor to fully restore power to all residents as soon as possible. As of last night, electricity has been restored to more than 245,000 Dallas residents. However, despite ongoing efforts, some residents still find themselves without power today.

Homeowners without power should carefully inspect their homes for electrical damage and contact a professional electrician if such damage is found. You can report any power outages directly here and find the latest updates here.

Additionally, a Multi-Agency Resource Center is set up at George W. Truett Elementary School (1810 Inadale Avenue), offering essential recovery services, including food assistance and debris cleanup. This center will be open until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, and residents needing transportation may call the Office of Emergency Management at (214) 670–4275.

Thank you to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Texans on Mission, Agape Connect, Service of Hope, and North Texas Food Bank for supporting this effort.

And of course, thank you to the Office of Emergency Management, whose leadership steered Dallas back on track, along with the Department of Public Works, the Department of Sanitation Services, and Dallas 311. The Dallas Fire-Rescue and the Dallas Police Department have also done exceptional work in managing the surge of emergency calls and ensuring safety during turbulent times.

Hopefully, the storms are now behind us, and clear skies are ahead for Dallas.

Everyone is excited about the NBA Finals, but this momentous occasion also provides an opportunity to highlight a strength shared between Dallas and Boston: public safety.

Last year, Americans ranked Dallas and Boston as the two safest major cities in the United States. According to an August 2023 Gallup Poll, Dallas was deemed the safest of 16 major American cities, with Boston following in second place.

This should come as no surprise. As you know, public safety has always been a top priority for this Administration, and this city intends to continue implementing data-driven strategies, programs, and initiatives to keep the community safe. This summer, the city has exciting programs lined up to carry on Dallas’ momentum toward becoming the undisputed safest big city in America. Stay tuned for more on that tomorrow!

That’s all for today. Take care of yourselves and others. Let’s go, Mavs! And let’s go, Stars!
