Committed to First Responders

Dallas is reinforcing its commitment to public safety officers and first responders.

One year ago, I established the Ad Hoc Committee on Pensions with Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins as chair. Working alongside city staff, financial experts, and community leaders, the committee carefully developed a funding plan for the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System.

On Wednesday, the city approved that plan to protect pension benefits for first responders. The city will contribute $11 billion over the next 30 years to fully fund the pension and ensure retirees can live comfortably as a proper reward for their service to Dallas.

When Dallas makes a commitment, we keep it. This city has promised to take care of both its active first responders and its retirees, and this plan honors the men and women who dedicated themselves to keeping Dallas safe.

Investing in New Convention Center

Dallas also advanced key components of the new Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on Wednesday, awarding more than $187 million for a design contract and deck parks over I-30 that will seamlessly connect downtown to southern Dallas through additional green space.

Funded at no additional cost to residents, this development will make Dallas a premier destination for conventions, with nearly 50 events worth over $1.2 billion already booked after its opening in 2029. Upon completion, the new convention center will transform downtown Dallas, driving unprecedented economic growth and reinforcing Dallas’ status as a world-class city.

Talking Public Policy with Students

On Friday, I had the pleasure of speaking with public policy graduate students at Southern Methodist University about effective policymaking and the broader role of a mayor as the embodiment of the city and the people they serve. Dallas is proud to be home to such a prestigious institution that continues to diligently educate the next generation of public servants.

Budget Vote

This Wednesday, the city will vote to approve the FY 24–25 budget, which in its current form, includes the largest tax rate reduction Dallas has seen in decades, as well as increased investment in public safety.

My highest priority is for Dallas to enter the coming year with a more efficient government that invests properly in public safety and core services while easing the tax burden on residents. If you support this vision, there is still time to contact your council member or register to speak at Wednesday’s meeting.

North Texas Giving Day

Lastly, this week marks the final stretch of the 16th annual North Texas Giving Day, which runs through this Thursday, September 19. Hosted by the Communities Foundation of Texas, North Texas Giving Day has become the nation’s largest regional giving event, with more than 3,000 participating nonprofits.

To donate, click here. And if you want to give but are not sure where to donate, the North Texas Giving Day’s online database allows you to easily find local organizations aligned with what you care about.

That’s all for today. Stay safe, and have a great week!
