Nuevo León Governor Samuel Garcia to address the Dallas City Council

DALLAS — Nuevo León Governor Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda will address the City Council during its meeting Wednesday.

Mayor Eric Johnson invited Governor Garcia to visit Dallas during the mayor’s official visit to Mexico last month. The governor and the mayor met at the governor’s palace in Monterrey, which is Dallas’ Sister City.

Mayor Johnson posted the governor’s address on the Dallas City Council’s official April 27, 2022 agenda. The governor will be available to speak to the media in the Flag Room after the address, which is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

“This is an extraordinarily special occasion for the Dallas City Council, and we are honored and excited to welcome Governor Garcia during his visit to our great city,” Mayor Johnson said. “Dallas and Nuevo León have a strong and mutually beneficial relationship, and I look forward to continuing the productive conversation that the governor and I started during my official visit to Mexico last month.”

Governor García took office in October 2021 and leads a state that is home to more than 5.7 million people. He is pursuing his third doctorate — in Constitutional Law and Governance — at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL), where he has also taught tax law. He previously served as a local Deputy for District 18 in Nuevo León, from 2015 to 2018, and as a Senator for Nuevo León until becoming governor. In addition, he is the author of three books and has been a speaker and writer in various media.

“Texas and Nuevo León are like brothers. That is why I am pleased with our partnership with Mayor Johnson and Dallas’ government,” said Governor Garcia. “I am confident that our relationship will be very fruitful.”

Governor Garcia also said Nuevo León is “the best place to visit, grow, learn, and live!”

“In Nuevo León, we will welcome you with open arms,” the governor said. “Visitors will enjoy our wonderful tourist destinations, and investors will have great opportunities to expand their businesses and boost their investments in Nuevo León.”

Mayor Johnson visited Mexico — he had meetings in Mexico City and Monterrey — the week of March 28. It was his first official international trip as mayor.

The mayor and governor met on March 31 — the last day of the trip. During their meeting, Mayor Johnson detailed the case for Monterrey and Nuevo León businesses to make a disproportionate investment in Dallas.

After the meeting, the mayor and governor’s teams began work on a memorandum of understanding that would encourage tourism and commerce between the two jurisdictions.
