Dallas continues to make great strides in its fight to improve public safety, with violent crime hitting record lows in recent weeks.

This year, violent crime has fallen to a six-year low. Murders and aggravated assaults have dropped about 25% year-to-date. Violent crime across the board is on the decline thanks to the incredible work of the brave men and women of the Dallas Police Department.

Cracking down on crime has been one of my top priorities, and the data is abundantly clear that those efforts are paying off.

A recent analysis by the Wall Street Journal found that Dallas has seen a nearly 30% reduction in homicides year-over-year. Violent crime has gone down every year since the Violent Crime Reduction Plan and hotspot policing were implemented three years ago, and Dallas has no intention of slowing down.

City Hall and Law Enforcement

These numbers show that Dallas’ approach to violent crime is working, and an essential piece of that approach is fostering a healthy relationship between the police department and City Hall. Dallas has been recognized for having a notably strong relationship between elected officials and law enforcement, which not every city is blessed to have.

This Administration and the police department are committed to holding the line against violent crime and making Dallas the safest big city in America.

New Poet Laureate

In addition to Dallas’ achievements in public safety, Dallas has many exciting things going on in arts and culture.

I recently had the pleasure of officially appointing Dr. Mag Gabbert as the second Dallas Poet Laureate and Naisha Randhar as the city’s second Youth Poet Laureate.

Dr. Gabbert is a Dallas native and an award-winning author of a full-length poetry book. For the next two years, she will represent the city as an ambassador of the literary arts. As Dallas’ chief poet, she will have many opportunities to share enriching poetry with the people of Dallas. The city first instituted the poet laureate position two years ago, and this city is incredibly grateful to Dr. Gabbert for continuing this great service.

Naisha, Dallas’ new Youth Poet Laureate, is a ninth-grade student at The Hockaday School. She is actively involved with her school, participating in the debate team, Model UN, and the track team. Naisha is also a wonderfully gifted writer, having published her own fantasy novel at age 12. Dallas is tremendously proud of fostering such talented youth.

That’s all for today. Stay safe and have a great week!
