This is an extract from the WAN-IFRA’s annual flagship report, World Press Trends Outlook 2023–2024. I’ll be publishing the report on a chapter-by-chapter basis here on Medium in the coming weeks.

The World Press Trends report this year presents a more optimistic outlook compared to the pessimistic prospects seen in our 2022–2023 report.

More than half of the respondents are positive about their company’s future, with more publishers expecting revenue growth in both 2023 and 2024. This optimistic view is noteworthy considering the challenges publishers are facing, such as geopolitical instabilities in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East, economic pressures from rising inflation and interest rates, and ongoing changes in advertising markets and audience behaviors.

Unsurprisingly AI and Automation is in the spotlight as the leading investment tech area with 87% of the respondents identifying this sector as their priority for the coming 12 months, closely followed by…
