How am I using AI in the classroom?

Journalism students need to critically embrace generative AI, rather than being discouraged from using it altogether

As we kick off the New Year and the start of another term, I wanted to share some thoughts on generative AI use within the classroom.

Generative AI tools are already rapidly reshaping how many people work and learn. A straw poll of my students yesterday, the first day of the Winter Term, found that considerably more of them are AI than before. Or, at least, they are more willing to admit it!

These tools can, if used correctly, boost creativity, streamline workflows, and enhance productivity. (Although I spend so long editing any AI-assisted work that I am not sure it is much of a time-saver for me, personally.)

In an academic setting, it is vital that students do not become reliant on AI, or deskilled as a result of using these tools. As such, it is essential that they use these technologies with their eyes open to both AI’s potential benefits, as well as its shortcomings.

We must also talk to students about the environmental impact of AI. This should be part of their thinking when it comes to determining when you use AI technologies and to do so responsibly.
