5 Things to Prep Your Home for Spring (and an Amazon cart of all the supplies you’ll need)

--

Ah spring! The air is warmer, the grass is greener and our homes are, well… dirtier. It’s time to spring clean, and while that may not be everyone’s favourite way to spend a Sunday, these 5 things will make your home feel brand new and ready for the season, and we’ve even built your Amazon cart to help you get everything you’ll need!

Clean Rain Gutters

While an unpleasant job, it is necessary. In heavy rain, as we tend to have in the spring, clogged gutters mean rain is pouring down the side of your home, flooding flower beds and causing foundation damage.

Get out your gloves and a long sleeve shirt you aren’t too fond of, and hop to it! Use a gutter scoop (or a small plastic shovel) to get the debris out of the way, and then hose down when finished.

You’ll want to make sure that you’re using a standoff ladder to keep you steady.

Scrub Baseboards and Outlets

You’d be surprised at how dirty your baseboards are, and what a difference it makes when they’re clean.

Start out by vacuuming, and then wipe them down. Use a magic eraser sponge dipped in a mixture of warm water, dish soap and vinegar for the best results. You can even use a cotton swap to get into the crevices.

Wash Exterior Windows

Washing your exterior windows will brighten up the outside and the inside of your home. For this you’ll need a microfiber strip applicator and a squeegee. This will help you clean large areas without the risk of scratching your windows.

Remove dirt with your strip applicator. You can purchase a window cleaner, but warm water with a little bit of soap works as well. Then squeegee clean. Instead of going in straight lines, use This Old House’s technique of a large reverse S-pattern. Wipe your squeegee clean after each stroke.

Finally, dry off remaining drips with a microfiber cloth, and you’re good to go!

Check Systems and Alarms

Spring is a great time to make sure that everything in your house is in working order. Check your ductwork for any wear, make sure there’s nothing blocking, or in the way of your vents and take a look at your drain line.

While you’re at it, make sure the your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors have fresh batteries!

Replace Outdoor Mats

This one’s easy and gives your front door a fresher feel. Not to mention it saves you from all the old winter sludge being tracked into your newly cleaned home! Check out some of these funny mats.

Alright, bring it on spring!
