Found in many cultures across the world, traditional dance often reflects important elements of a country’s heritage.[/caption]

When you think of dance moves, you probably think of break dancing, hip hop, tango, or ballet.

One type of dance that probably doesn’t come to mind is traditional dancing. But it’s worth noting that traditional dancing, although far less common than many mainstream styles of dance, is still fascinating –especially when you trace the history of the dances, or try to interpret their meanings.

Traditional dances were the predecessor for many modern dances, and elements of these ancient dances can be found in some dance styles today. Since the earliest stages of human history, dance has been an important and integral part of everyday life, and were often used in social gatherings, spiritual gatherings, or to celebrate events. Today, it’s no different. Dance is still used on important and special occasions.

In the spirit of celebrating dance, we are pleased to present seven traditional dances from around the world. From India to Russia, and Mongolia to Scotland, these dance videos that are worth watching!

“Rabam Kinaree” Thai Traditional Dance

This traditional Thai dance, the Rabam Kinnaree, draws inspiration from the Kinaree –a half-bird, half-human creature. Elaborate costumes and graceful, fluid motion characterize this dance, and as you watch, you’ll see the story come to life as the dancers interpret it through the dance.

This dance is an excerpt from the story called Prince Suthon and the Kinnari Manohra –and tells the story of a half-bird, half-woman creature who faced the prospect of being sacrificed by fire. Don’t worry though, the story has a good ending. Manohra pretends to accept the sacrifice, but after dancing a few rounds, she then flies away to her homeland.

“Fairs Fly in Sky” (飛天) Chinese Traditional Dance

Highly-trained dancers, elaborate costumes, graceful fluid movements, and special effects combine to create this traditional Chinese dance that is both traditional and modern, mesmerizing, and intriguing. The dance is inspired by a mural known as the “Flying Fairs of Dunhuang Mural.” The dancers in this video are extremely good at conveying the feeling of flying, and through their dance make it appear as though they are indeed representing something ethereal.

“Berezka” Russian Folk Dance

The Berezka is a Russian Folk Dance that features impressive synchronization that makes each of the dancers appear that they are moving like clockwork –quite literally too. The dancers form circular formations, and as they dance, they appear as though they are floating. Very small and fast steps are the key to this dance. Watch closely: are they really walking?

“Zehil” and “Rugaro Nekutamba (Being Happy)” African Dance

Performed by the Seattle Theater Group, this dance features tons of energy and vibrant, happy moves. It’s the kind of dance that appears relatively simple, but there is undoubtedly an extremely high level of energy that’s required to properly convey the feelings that are central to this dance. Impressive, and fun to watch.

“Bharathanatyam Dance” -The Indian Classical Dance

Indian culture is known for their beautiful dances, complete with expressive hand motions known as hastas. This dance is a traditional Indian dance that’s set to a Telugu traditional Christian hymn. The dance and the music both flow beautifully, and with plenty of spins, twists, and hand interpretations, this dance just might inspire you to take up Bollywood-style dancing!

Scottish Traditional Folk Dance

Of course, this list couldn’t be complete without a mention of the Scottish dance. A fun, lively, and very energetic dance, this video features impressive footwork and a full-fledged Scottish bagpipe ensemble.

Traditional Mongolian Music and Dance

Back to the Far East again, this time with a video that features traditional Mongolian music and dance. The music and dance gives you a fascinating glimpse into Mongolian culture, and the traditional costumes make it seem as though it could have been from any era.
