Do I Have to Be in Shape to Start Taking Dance Class?
When you think of dance classes; you may imagine being in a room filled with slim, toned, athletic people. But the fact is that you can join a dance class, regardless of your fitness level.[/caption]
When many people think of taking a dance class, they assume that you should be in top shape in order to join.
But this isn’t the case. While being in shape is great, those who aren’t yet at this point shouldn’t let it hold them back from signing up. When it comes to taking a dance class, health matters most, far more than physical fitness level. If you’re healthy, there’s no reason you can’t join a dance class.
Regardless of how fit you are –you probably won’t be as flexible, strong, or comfortable as you’d like to be when you first join –but no one is. Most times, this is simply because you need practice. Even children who first start dancing have a difficult time performing every move perfectly.
Being in shape can help you feel more confident in your moves –but being in shape is by no means a requirement for joining a dance class. As long as you’re able to make a good effort in performing the moves, and have an openness and willingness to learn, you’re an ideal candidate.

Stick With It
Dancing will be a challenge –but don’t give up! While it may be a bit difficult at first trying to keep up and improve your flexibility and moves, it’s important to keep at it. Remember: the longer you attend classes, and the more you practice, the better you’ll become.
Have Realistic Expectations
It is unrealistic to expect yourself to become fit and trim as soon as you join a dance class. While you will gain strength and flexibility, once-weekly dance classes aren’t enough to get someone into shape. If you’re looking to get toned, you’ll need to include other forms of exercise as well. Ideally, you’ll want to include strength training, core exercise, and aerobics to get the results that you’re after.
Consider Additional Classes
If you’re hoping to step up your dance skills, you’ll be able to see results a lot faster if you add more than one class per week. This will help you to strengthen key muscles, and improve your balance, flexibility, and agility.
If you’re worried you aren’t fit enough to dance, think again. Remember –if you are healthy enough to dance, then you can start where you’re at and work your way up, improving your endurance as you go along. You don’t have to be in the best shape of your life in order to join a dance class and experience some of the amazing benefits of dance. As always though, before starting an intense exercise regime, it’s important to discuss your plans with your doctor first, just to make sure you’re in good health.
Dance can be a great activity that will benefit your life in more ways than one.
