As a dancer, you know the importance of proper foot care, you work hard to keep your feet healthy and take steps to minimize injuries.

But taking care of your shoes is just as important. After all, worn or poor-fitting shoes can cause damage to your feet, leading to all sorts of issues like blisters, hammertoes, and bunions. Without proper care, shoes can also become breeding grounds for bacteria, and without regular upkeep, leather shoes can dry out.

When it comes to dancing –there isn’t a lot of equipment or gear that’s required. All that you need is a good pair (or few!) of shoes. Caring for your shoes is important; not only does it help them to last longer, it also helps keeps them in great condition, and consequently, your feet in good shape as well.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at a few do’s and don’ts of dance shoe care.

Do: Air Them Out

Dancing causes you to sweat, much of which ends up in your shoes. This means that you shouldn’t just toss your dance shoes, in their bag, into the corner when you get home. Instead, give your shoes some breathing room. Leaving them out overnight can allow them to get some much-needed air, and to help prevent fungus from growing in them.

Do: Clean Your Shoes

You can wash canvas shoes in the washer if they need cleaning. If you have leather shoes, you can clean them by using a piece of melamine foam. For suede-bottom shoes, use a shoe brush to clean them, and to help them to maintain their texture.

Do: Use a Variety of Shoes

It’s a good idea to vary the shoes that you wear. Wearing one specific type of shoe can cause repeated pressure to be put on the same areas of the foot, which can lead to problems like bunions or blisters, so be sure to rotate your dance shoes, and opt for a few different pairs.

Don’t: Use Damaged Shoes

Wearing broken shoes can lead to serious injury, and you should never dance in broken or damaged shoes. Be sure that your shoes are in good condition before you practice or perform. It’s a good idea to have a backup pair of shoes on hand in case one pair gets damaged.

Don’t: Put Them in the Dryer

While canvas shoes, such as ballet shoes can be washed in the washer, they should never put in the dryer. Drying shoes can cause them to shrink.

Don’t: Forget About Them

Not maintaining your shoes and forgetting to clean them can damage your shoes over time. Avoid storing your shoes in a plastic bag, putting them in a bag while they are still wet and sweaty can cause them to smell and ultimately decay over time.

Don’t: Wear Them Outside the Studio

Not that you would do this with ballet shoes, of course, but if you have dance shoes that you’re tempted to wear out and about –don’t. Most dance shoes don’t offer the right support for outdoor use, plus, they’ll get dirty and will wear out much faster.

Show your dance shoes some love! Taking a few extra minutes to care for your shoes properly is important for helping to keep them in great shape. Not only that, but keeping your shoes in good condition can help you to prevent injuries, and keep your feet healthy and strong.
