How to build a Gingerbread House
One of the best times of the year is during the holiday season, creating sweet memories with the whole family. What better way to do so than to create a gingerbread house? To some, making a gingerbread house from scratch can be intimidating and overwhelming.
At Dancing Deer, we love to share our passion for baking so we make it easy for you with a complete DIY Gingerbread House Kit. The kit comes with tasty gingerbread cookies, frosting mix, and a piping bag. All you need to add is the creativity and candy decorations of your choice!
Here’s step-by-step instructions on how to build your DIY Gingerbread House Kit from Dancing Deer.
Open the top of the box and cut along the dotted lines. Fold and tape the roof of the box shut for a stable base.
Pour the icing mix into a bowl and add 1/4 of a cup plus one tablespoon of water. Continue to mix for about 5 minutes until the icing is smooth and creamy. If you don’t mix for 5 minutes, the icing will be too runny and will not stay on the gingerbread house. Otherwise you could hold back a couple teaspoons of water and only add them if needed. Test on the house with a cookie to see if it holds.
Use tape, glue, or royal icing to attach the cardboard house to your lawn base. For your base, you could use cardboard, a tray, or a plate.
Now its time to decorate! Using an angled spatula, spread an even layer of thick icing covering each side of the house and roof. Stick the cookies to the sides and roof of the box, alternating with any decorations of your choose.
Using the piping bag and icing, feel free to add designs to the cookies like windows and doors. If you would like to add decorations to the house, use things like candies, sugar, cinnamon sticks, raisins, cranberries, nuts, or dried pasta. Make beautiful stone walls, pathways, and foundations using dried peas, beans and lentils.
