A Few Thoughts on Medium Engagement and How to Improve It

Over time — I have realized that increasing engagement on Medium — is both an art and a complex puzzle. Sometimes, I get caught up in numbers — claps, views, and followers — but I believe there is a more subtle way to deconstruct it all.

I wanted to share a handful of my personal experiences in what works (and what doesn’t) and how we can make engagement on Medium better.

* Titles Are Half the Battle

You can never underestimate the power of a good title. The fact is, no one will even look at your mind-blowing content if they don’t click on it first — essentially rendering that amazing article you just crafted worthless. The titles that make you curious or offer a different angle get more clicks. Title is half the battle, or that is what it felt like at times trying to get readers just even look at your piece straight in its eyes.

From what I have seen, a title that is too general, or only has some “clever” play on words attached, fails. With Medium, they appear to like a very direct punch in the title — where they can instantly relate that your article is going to either…
