Cupcakes and Frosting
In response to Dancing Elephants prompt 3 of Life Column
I grew up in Calcutta and now live in Bombay. Now Kolkata and Mumbai, but I’m stuck to the old-school names.
One city is my soul and the other is my heartbeat. I cannot choose between the homes but the one thing I miss frequently about Calcutta is its culinary delights. I miss all my favourite snacks and street food that I had while growing up. Phuchka, jhal muri, luchi alu, bhaja, sondesh, mishti doi and the butter cakes to name a few.
Lately, I have been feeling homesick and as I don’t enjoy any snacks available here, I was reminiscing about the simple Calcutta cupcakes. Very few places have retained the old-world charm of celebrating traditional recipes. We have fancy options everywhere but the classic menus are sadly disappearing.
I decided to try and make something I had never tried and searched for traditional recipes online. I made cherry and almond-filled butter cupcakes with butterscotch frosting with a hint of cocoa! And the entire process took me back to my childhood where mom used to bake fresh brown tea cakes in those round plug-in ovens. Those were such simple joys of life.
I decorated the cupcakes and felt so happy and refreshed. It was almost like biting into a slice of childhood. And the joy of munching a cherry in the cupcake reminded me that life can be so beautiful with little things.
