Ever drooled over those pictures of cute wooden balconies and windowsills decked with hanging geraniums and petunias? I thought that was only in movies until I came to Germany.
Well, most of Europe is like that.
The first time I landed in Germany, I was flabbergasted by the hanging geraniums on my neighbor’s very small balcony. It was such a joy to see those flowers every morning and every time I came out to sit on the balcony.
I have lived before in the USA and while there were several plants and flowers everywhere but I didn’t really see houses and balconies overflowing with flowers.
I had the idea that to have loads of flowers, you need a bigger space. But living in Germany changed that opinion of mine.
One of my German neighbors was very diligent in changing all the flowers according to season.
The first of March meant the onset of Spring and the approaching Easter. She would bring in all the hyacinths, daffodils, tulips, gerbera daisies, or the iris.
