Old Belief | Nazarbattu

Artwork Lubna Yusuf

The belief in the evil eye dates back almost 3,000 years to ancient Greece and Rome. It is one of the strongest symbolic images in the world. Wearing an evil eye as an amulet or nazarbattu, is believed to provide protection against evil forces. The evil eye has symbolism is almost every country in the world and in every religion, such as Judaism, Islam, Hindu, Buddhism, and Christianity.

It is most interesting as the eyes are a portal to the world, and the concept that an evil glance can inflict evil upon you and create roadblocks in your way. An evil eye is like a curse brought about by a malevolent glare or buri nazar, usually inspired by envy.
The belief is also linked to witchcraft and wizardry of ancient times. While I’m not religious or superstitious in my beliefs , I am spiritual and I cannot help but get curious about these hidden symbols and their significance, which have lasted thousands of years, in all beliefs.

I’d also like to share a strange anecdote:
When I started making line artworks seriously, as a means of my artistic expression, I always felt I should look at my artworks from a third person’s view. I have always felt my art is my way of conversing with myself when I fall short of words, so it always felt as if I am looking at it, as if it were looking back at me too. So I started drawing these little eyes in all my works, as my artistic signature. After a few months I stumbled upon the same symbol in a craft store, and I found that the eye I was drawing was in fact an ancient symbol of the evil eye!

An example of the eye, from my artwork collection: Lubna Yusuf

I was very intrigued and when I did some further research I found out its hidden meaning and the hamza hands and how they guard and protect us from all evils. Perhaps it was a message from the Universe to protect me and I felt so in sync with my thoughts as well as completely awestruck by the bizarre coincidence.

Lately, I have been going through a very rough patch in life, so I took up my favourite hobby of embroidery to help me heal through the difficult times. I crafted this evil eye with needle and wool threads and made myself this protection charm. Hope it works and I am able to sail through the tough phase with the protection of the Universe.
