Back in the 1980s, I taught a series of courses on emotions. These were tied to my book Beyond Thought. At the end of each class, I offered a Q&A session. Here’s a transcript of one of those Q&A sessions.

Foundational Principle for this Lesson: To create a personal plan for retrieving emotional balance.

Definition: Emotion — A mental and physiological state associated with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.

STUDENT: How would a person “understand” his or her emotions?

LEWIS: This is not a scientific definition. Understanding your emotions implies that when you experience a vague or specific feeling that has no explanation, you explore it. Let’s say you feel slightly depressed but you can’t say why. Learning to explore and understand your emotions can be invaluable.
