Recently, we celebrated the 11th anniversary of our marriage with my wife.

Fortuitously, it fell on a weekend, affording us the chance to plan a day filled with diverse activities.

In the morning, we immersed ourselves in the melodies at a KTV, singing joyously for four consecutive hours — a pleasure that transported us back to the carefree days of our youth.

For lunch, we dined simply within the KTV premises. While the takeout food was mediocre in taste, the casual ambiance it offered enveloped us in warmth.

In the afternoon, we revisited the park where we had our first date — a place we often frequent on sunny days for strolls, a venue pregnant with cherished memories and a testament to our decade-long journey from strangers to lovers.

With lush greenery and crisp air, the park seemed to fuse us with nature. There, we cycled, rowed boats, fished, and serendipitously encountered the annual ‘Urban Forest Flower Exhibition,’ where a dazzling array of blossoms captivated us, prompting us to take numerous photos as mementos.

As evening approached, my wife took charge in the kitchen, and I assisted, collaboratively crafting an intimate and sumptuous romantic dinner for two. Amidst the feast and reflections, we retraced the ups and downs of our eleven years together.

In the cozy confines of our home, we recounted laughter, tears, disagreements, and moments of uncertainty that have marked our marriage. Far from eroding our bond, these experiences fortified our love.

These eleven years have taught us the recipe for a happy marriage: mutual respect, tolerance, trust, and understanding.

We understand that there are no shortcuts to a blissful union; it necessitates our joint efforts and relentless pursuit.

An ideal marriage is elusive; like most, ours initially encountered a myriad of issues requiring gradual adaptation, learning, and shared growth.

Reflecting back

During the early years of our marriage, trivial matters and arguments arose — misplaced shoes, jackets tossed on the bed, scattered socks, and my inattention due to work or idle phone scrolling, leaving my wife feeling neglected and struggling to balance life and work.

At that time, my greatest shortcomings were a reluctance to share household chores and insufficient companionship for my wife.

My father’s transformation

My father’s transformation provided profound insight. He once faced similar issues but, after the passing of his parents (my grandparents), realized the importance of cherishing those around him.

He now actively shares household responsibilities with my mother, engaging in tasks like laundry, cooking, and caring for my grandmother.

It’s heartening to witness this positive change.

Effective communication proved crucial

Early in our marriage, my wife would frequently express dissatisfaction with my habits. Initially dismissive, I eventually heeded her call for a sincere conversation — the first formal, open-hearted talk since our wedding.

We prioritized managing emotions before addressing problems, avoiding hasty conclusions and blame, recognizing that issues seldom stem from one party alone.

The key to changing dynamics lies within ourselves.

By identifying and tackling root causes, we addressed issues head-on, sharing work stress, joys, and brainstorming solutions together. Even when unable to directly alleviate each other’s burdens, we lent ears and solace, learning from our mistakes and improving our approach to avoid future rifts.

Shared hobbies, such as singing and traveling, strengthened our bond, fostering deeper connections and tacit understanding. Our impromptu travels enriched our relationship by exploring new horizons together.

Eleven years of adjustments have nurtured an unspoken understanding between us, deepening our appreciation for one another.

Our marriage and love are simple, yet we revel in this simplicity, believing that love and mutual support form the essence of our partnership.
