One evening, on my walk home, a woman approached me with a curious look and asked, “Are you her daughter?”

Somewhat surprised, I replied, “Yes, I am.”

Her face lit up with a knowing smile, as if she had just found what she was looking for. She kept smiling, clearly pleased. Curious, I asked, “Who are you? And how do you know my mother?”

With a heartfelt smile, she said, “I’ve been watching you for days. Every time you walked by, it felt like I was seeing her in her youth, just like she was in the ’90s. I wasn’t sure how to approach you, but I knew you had to be her daughter.”

She handed me her phone number and asked if I could give it to my mom.

This moment made me smile. It felt amazing to be the link that rekindled an old friendship, simply because I look like my mother.

I’ve heard this before. I still remember a time when my grandmother introduced me to some people and mistakenly said I was her eldest daughter’s child. Immediately, a stranger who had never met me but knew my mother from childhood corrected her: “No, she has to be your middle daughter’s child.”

I don’t just resemble my mother — our hearts and minds are alike too. We share a deep love for books and writing. She was a poet during her college days, and we both treasure our collections of books.

She loves gardening. She has a beautiful garden downstairs, while I have my own little garden on the verandah upstairs.

My mother is a broad-minded, empathetic, and compassionate person. She has the most loyal and wonderful people in her life.

She’s the only person on Earth who can read me like a book. It always surprises me when she says exactly what’s on my mind. Even our tastes are so similar that we often laugh and say, “You too?!” whenever we discover yet another thing we both love.

It’s these little connections that make our bond so special. 🩷
