Trapped In My Heart

she lays her hands so softly
upon her prison walls
she cries the tears of lovers
each one just rolls and falls
trapped inside my heart
refusing to let go
the more she hangs on tight
the pain I feel will grow
trapped inside this prison
I have made for her
sleep will not be given
till her heart again is pure
she will sit in my heart forever
or as long as it will take
my hearts an open forest
that grows with every break

There are many ways to read how poetry can speak to each of us. Even as I re-read this, knowing I wrote it 20+ years ago, I feel weird sharing it. It feels like an abusive relationship is unfolding in these words.

I also don't know who is being held captive in this relationship. Is it the writer or the person being written about? I also want to assure you that I never would do such a thing.
