A few days ago, while having a regular conversation with my paternal uncle, his words of wisdom left a mark on my mind and gave me food for thought. Before jumping on that topic, I should say something about my uncle.

He spent the prime time of his life voyaging from vast ocean to ocean as the captain of commercial container ships. The depth of the deep sea, the width of experiencing diverse people and cultures, and the intensity of navigating life-threatening incidents have made him a man of wisdom.

Let us move on to the point that moves me to the core.

At one point, my uncle asked me,

“ … do you realize, at this moment we are talking, thousands of people are taking their last breath and leaving the world? Why are we still alive?, Why have we not died yet?

He continued that we are alive because there are still reasons for us to live, to celebrate our existence on this beautiful earth.

Our God still wants us to live in this world for a purpose, to do good to ourselves, others, and the world in our capacities. On the other hand, when our existence would be of no reason on this earth, our call for death will also come.”

He said it so beautifully!

His word made a permanent mark on my mind, and since then, I often think about the reason for our existence on this earth. Certainly, Almighty has assigned some agenda to us. So, we must make our existence meaningful and do something for the betterment of the world.

I would like to shoutout one of my favorite poets, Neera Handa Dr for her magical creation ‘Thoughts in the Mist’

I would also like to shoutout Victoria Gregg for one of her amazing stories

‘Gathering up the fragments of myself.

Best wishes,

Umme Salam
