Ding!

Milne hated hearing Sara’s smartphone vibrate with a fresh message.

Ding!

Milne’s eyes were enough to see what Sara was doing at that moment. Her clothing made a rustling sound. The click-click-click faded. Indeed, Sara had been perusing her emails. Her little snort conveyed unfavorable news.

Sara said, “I have to go back to the office.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Sara’s kisses lingered on his forehead, still warm. As she stood up, Milne noticed a little draft of air. She let her trainers squeak off towards the bedroom. He sat by himself on the couch and felt around for the remote control with his palms.

“Scotty, beam me up,” were the final words he heard before pressing the off button.

“Chip right away, sir.” In response, Milne turned off the plasma.

Ding!

Ding!

Ding!

The sound of high heels tapping the floorboards grew faster. They came to a stop directly next to him, and he noticed Givenchy’s Very Irresistible.

“Oh no. Never again like that!”

He heard the tucked-in irritation in her voice.
