When the Time Comes

Do you notice
how I always let you win
in arguments and games?
I don’t mind losing to you
for the rest of our lives
if it means I’ll never lose you
I’ll always give you the glory
and celebrate your existence

The only thing I ask in return —
when the time comes
when we’re almost at the end
of this life’s race —
is for you to promise me
that you’ll let me win
you’ll let me be the first to go
the first to cross the finish line

I wish for you
to slow down
and take your time
in this race
however long you decide
don’t rush, my dear
enjoy the sight
and take deep breaths
if you ever need me

make plenty of memories
that you can share
in our reunion
I‘ll be excited to hear
your new jokes
and listen to your stories
I wasn’t able to witness
while I stare at you…

My thoughts and feelings have wings, and I let them fly through poems, prose, and stories.
