A Gnarly Jar Gets the Better of Me

It’s not fun when a tight lid snaps shut too close to a body part

Drawings were always a hit at our dance parties — until one night when a jar became a weapon and gave me a jolt I’ll never forget.

Dance events

One of the most fun events at my dance studio were our special dance parties. We scheduled one each year for Christmas, Valentine’s, and Halloween, one to celebrate winter, a spring fling, and one to celebrate the anniversary of opening the studio. In between, we may have had a few more in addition to student showcases.

They were fun for everyone, even for those who didn’t know how or care to learn to dance. They came to hang out, be entertained, and enjoy the food. However, we did give a mini dance lesson or two, had the dance teams perform at least one dance each, invited all onto the floor for simple line dances, and of course, the pièce de résistance — door prizes.

As people walked in the door, they would receive a ticket, and the stub would go into this jar I used for the occasion. It held candy at one point, was plastic about the size of a fishbowl, and had an attached lid that snapped open and shut.
