Know Your Lore — Legacy Airdrops (Part 6)
In the sixth part of the airdrops series, we will discuss the second airdrop of series 2.5, Island of Monkies.
Island of Monkies
Elden Ring dominated The Dan Gheesling Show on Twitch in 2022, and because of that the Elden Ring airdrops have dominated the airdrops series recently. However, once Dan finally got his fill of the Lands Between, he began sprinkling variety back into the show. An example of said variety was the remake of the 1990 Lucasfilm Games point-and-click adventure The Secret of Monkey Island.
Dan, always thirsty for “world record” PBs, decided to speedrun the game’s 2009 remake, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. In this version of the game, the player could seamlessly switch between the graphics from 1990 and modern graphics with the push of a button. Naturally, Dan stuck to the classic graphics that he knew and loved from his childhood:
Dan’s speedrun of the game was a lot quicker than most expected, coming in at just over 2 hours and 35 minutes. His insane pace was not only a PB, but good enough to be ranked tenth in the world:
If you’re interested in seeing the whole run in all its glory, the VODs can be viewed here and here. If you want the short and pogged version, you can watch the RinnyX edit here:
Between the PB, the top 10 speedrun, and the nostalgia, Dan decided the occasion called for an airdrop. On October 27, 2022, about five weeks after the event took place, Island of Monkies was distributed to 252 lucky recipients. 25 of those recipients were uber lucky and got the full art variant.
In part seven of the series, we’ll take a look at the seventh released airdrop, and the final airdrop of series 2.5, which immortalized Dan’s completion of Cuphead’s DLC.
