What’s in the Picture?
Artist Danesykins' depiction of the homeland of One Guys everywhere, the Bad Advice Bog. The Bog is a place that a Twitch Streamer can get stuck in when they consistently take bad advice from Chat. And since we did the One Guy WTDC article last week, this felt like an only natural follow-up!
What Does the Quote Me- Nah, That One Is Easy. Can I see the Full Art Instead?
Uhhh… sure!
What’s Hidden in the Full Art?
Inside the art are several examples of bad advice Dan has received over the years. When I spoke with artist Danesykins about the card, he asked me to challenge the readers to find every reference the card contains. (By the way, that’s his real Youtube channel where you can watch a video explaining how to download and install the Dan Gheesling skin for Spelunky 2! See Dan’s reveal of the mod and a straight butchering of the artist’s name here!) He also had this to say about the art:
“I think all the dangers work really well as a whole composition. I love how dark and scary the whole vibe is. It’s a nice contrast to a lot of other cards”
Can You Point Out a Reference For Example?
Absolutely! (Though it doesn’t appear that the Dan Gheesling Discord can…) Take a gander at the lower left quarter of the card. The chest with “OPEN ME” on it and an arm sticking out is a reference to the Dark Souls enemy known as a Mimic. A mimic is a common enemy in fantasy games that disguises itself as a treasure chest to lure players close so it can strike.
Wait, What Was That Thing About the Discord Channel?
On the Tuesday prior to the publishing of this article, I posted a challenge in the Discord channel. The channel I posted to was #dang-packs-general, one of (if not THE) most active channels in the Discord.
The post got some decent traction and I thought I would have a hard time picking the winner! And despite having DM’s more wide open than downtown Packsburg during peak trading hours, at time of publishing I have received 0 DM’s from this challenge. Seriously, one reference would have won it and one video would have won the prize for next week! Fair to say that Discord Squeexed this one and the lesson going forward is “Don’t be afraid to be crate!”
