  • Establish goals & challenges - Game mechanics provide players with objectives to work towards and obstacles to overcome. For example, scoring goals in soccer or capturing territories in Risk.
  • Enable interesting choices - Mechanics allow players to make meaningful decisions by weighing options like what character to play, where to move, or when to jump. This engages players in problem-solving.
  • Give feedback & consequences - Mechanics provide feedback on player actions through scoring, loss of lives, leveling up, etc. This helps players evaluate strategy and approach.
  • Introduce variability & randomness - Effective mechanics incorporate unpredictability to increase adaptability and replay value. For example, spawn locations in shooter maps or card draws in Hearthstone.
