Aiming for second place?

Not first, not third, not last. Next time, don’t even start.

Somebody is comfortable staying in the back. He looks at the other people passing, and doesn’t worry. They’ll trip, or get lost. In the long run, it won’t matter what position I’ll get at the end. Might as well be the last.

Some other people think that first place is the only viable option. Either you end up first, or you’re a total failure. They’ll even bend some rules to get what they want.

But who runs aiming for the second place?

Kinda hard, don’t you think? You should run faster than the third, but slower than the first. Difficult to get that right, isn’t it.

What if everybody wants to arrive second? Maybe nobody would even start the race. Are you going first?

And yet, often that’s what happens when you have an idea.

You seek validation. Reassurance from your peers.

Did anybody try this? Am I the first one?

If nobody ever thought about that, maybe it’s just too risky.

Or maybe they though about it and know better. They might have even failed trying.

And then BOOM somebody had the same idea, and all of a sudden we rush! We can’t be left behind! Last place is worth nothing after all.

Your new idea, the new provocative piece of content, the art that breaks conventions.

The help you’re supposed to give to somebody in need.

Kindness.

A counter offer to beg him stay in the company.

If all you’re looking is a second place, odds are you’ll go nowhere.
