The Year of The DAO

2019 continues to be the year of the DAO. Indeed, the conversation surrounding DAOs has matured a fair amount, and our dear Genesis community grows stronger than ever! Live since July 2018, the Genesis DAO has been one of the most active places to experience and experiment with decentralized governance and collaboration around shared resources.

This article will present briefly the journey of some of our most active community members as well as the general feeling of the GenDAO community post-Berlin Blockchain Week.

📍BBW

Shivani, Alex, Eylon, and Adrien at ETHBerlin

From the 18th to the 29th of August, Berlin hosted a multitude of events and workshops during the Blockchain Week. The DAOstack team and the Genesis community were there and it was a great pleasure to see everyone beyond their avatars.

🧞‍♂️ “3D versions of GenDAO members are superior to the 2D versions”

Usually, online interactions are very straight to the point and work driven. It’s a privilege to enjoy the spaces opened by these amazing events since so many unexpected synergies emerge from random conversations.

🎉DAOfest and the GenDAO community

DAOfest was a day-long event focused on understanding the mechanics of DAOs and the emerging ecosystem. It was the first event of a larger initiative to promote interactions between DAO members, share high-level discussions, show off active DAO pilots, and welcome new participants.

📣 Many active GenDAO members presented at DAOfest:

🏝 Luuk Weber, Fernando Trouw, and Ruben Russel discovered the potential of DAOs through Genesis and are applying it to their home Curaçao as they believe an island is a potent incubator to test innovative governance models. CuraDAO is live and under development with the local community. Luuk was part of the onboarding workshop at DAOfest and composed the “Real DAOs, Real progress” panel discussion.

🎨 Felipe Duarte is an artist and activist, and one of the first pollinators of Genesis. His contributions to the DAO were, for a while, his main source of income as he shared on “Working for a DAO”, the opening presentation of DAOfest. Felipe is now part of the DAOstack team and lead event organizer of DAOfest. A few of his notable accomplishments to date include the DAOcanvas, design methodology for envisioning decentralized structures and the Decentralized Thriving e-book.

💡Eric Arsenault joined Genesis in March. His contributions gradually gained complexity and not so long after his onboarding he launched the DAOfund, a DAO that seeks to invest in DAOs for ROI. He presented this project on the main stage of DAOfest and you can already get involved at https://www.thedaofund.net/

👩🏽‍💻 Shiv joined Genesis last year after EthBerlin. She hacked on DAOstack and worked on a DAO that could raise funds by crowdsourcing debt with fixed interest using the Dharma platform. Following EthBerlin, she created the DAOexplorer which enables viewing of user/staker/proposer history and filter/sorting of most active users or proposals within Alchemy. Shiv joined the DAOstack team about a month before EthBerlin and EthIndia 2019 to help manage the developer community in the DAOstack ecosystem.

⚖️ Ori Shimoni and Jordan Ellis joined the Genesis DAO around November 2018. They were active members of the open-source community and founded dOrg, a freelance developer cooperative incorporated as the first blockchain-based limited liability DAO under US law. Ori spoke at DAOfest about their legal journey and Jordan gave a technical deep-dive workshop into the different projects they’ve been working on.

Adam Levi, CTO, introduced DAOstack’s vision of super scalable collaborative networks at DAOfest.

When Genesis was questioned about the key takeaways of the Berlin Blockchain week, the general response was that:

📲 The user experience is improving, especially with the increasing development of mobile integrations

🌀 People are more curious about DAO models and use cases. There are more organic involvement and a broader understanding of what DAOs are and what different projects and platforms have to offer

💎The Ethereum community, in general, was very hands on. There is a lot of dedication of layer 1 and layer 2 programmers.

👩‍⚖️There is an urgent need to focus on the Legality of DAOs.

Genesis Alliance

Our grand vision of mass collaboration is starting to form with Mark Pereira building a mobile version of Alchemy, Pepo Ospina building the underscore protocol, and Sebastian building a prediction bot, with many more amazing collaborations in the pipeline.”

– Alex Zak, Alchemy Product Director

Genesis Alpha is in a transition phase, on the way to becoming the Genesis Alliance 1.0. You can see the schematics for the planned release here. More information and high-level presentations about it are coming soon. If you are not part of Genesis yet, consider this an invitation to collaborate with us, as we are helping to build the future of decentralized governance.
