On Monday, October 30th, Axiom Zen hosted the world’s first blockchain debate in downtown Vancouver, BC.

Eight debaters arrived at Vancouver’s HiVE on West Hastings Street to discuss the real-world implications of blockchain, the technology that empowers Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the dozens of daily ICOs that raise millions in funding.

Hot off our win at ETHWaterloo — the world’s largest ethereum hackathon — our team hosted a panel centered on the tipping point for blockchain. Conversations concentrated on the practical future for the technology, including:

  • When will governments put currencies on the blockchain?
  • When will the Wild West of crypto-investing come back to Earth?
  • When will blockchain be ubiquitous enough to be featured in a rap song?

Investors, CEOs, engineers, and crypto enthusiasts flocked from far and wide to experience the (twice) sold out event. The panelists, a collective of veteran and fluent blockchain experts, articulated the opportunities, obstacles, and potential future for the world-changing technology.

“This event was the best way to transfer information and discuss ideas through with the community,” said Axiom Zen’s Instigator and Event Host Mack Flavelle.

“Online writing is great for going deep on a subject matter, but in the mile-a-minute world of blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and ICOs, discerning signal from noise is hard. When you get together in real life and have brilliant people publicly debate interesting topics, you can have deeper, more meaningful conversations — ones that truly impact future ideas.”

Being on your phone wasn’t just allowed: it was encouraged. Mack told the audience to share as much as they pleased, which lead to the event trending on social media. Beer, CryptoKitties, and an unplanned audience participation all took place.

The event culminated in an audience vote that saw local software engineer Nicole Demers winning the debate.
