Members of the Dapper Labs team recently headed to Brooklyn to attend ETHNewYork. In addition to sampling as much New York pizza as we could and handing out Dapper swag left and right, we connected with passionate developers and debated the future of Ethereum.

The highlight for us was definitely the hackathon portion, where we hosted bounties that challenged developers to create dapps that used Dapper, dapps that used CryptoKitties, or dapps that use both!

Here are some of the standout projects these teams created.

Our Developer Relations Engineer Lyn explaining all things Dapper

KittyFi — 1st Place ($1,500)

Developer Brian Ho took home first place (and $1500) for our bounty with his project KittyFi.

Just like every Pokemon gives a unique cry when it enters the battlefield, KittyFi gives every CryptoKitty a distinct call. But rather than simply programming a predetermined sound, every Kitty’s meow is generated based on its unique genetic code.

Cujo — 2nd Place ($1,000)

Cujo, developed by Isaac and Dustin, took home second place and a $1000 prize.

In their words, Cujo “splits any arbitrary ERC-721 into an ERC-20 representing shares of the NFT. Anyone who possesses 100% of the ERC-20 tokens can reconstruct the NFT and redeem the ERC-721.”

But that’s not all. Once the NFT has been split into ERC-20 “shares,” players can enter a 3D battle arena to duke it out and win other player’s shares. If they win all of them, they can reconstruct the ERC-721 (i.e. the Kitty) and claim it as their rightful prize.

Feline Term Deposit

Tom Nash and Alexander Ramsey created Feline Term Deposit, which makes your Kitties even more interesting… literally. It lets players accrue interest on their CryptoKitty NFTs. “Believe it or not, we aren’t siphoning out the souls of your CryptoKitties and selling their essence on secondary markets, we’re just giving you exposure to Compound Finance,” the duo explains.

Your “savings account” is visually represented by a sort of sticker of your CryptoKitty, and as your interest grows, your sticker grows with it.

Cygnus

Cygnus is the brainchild of a four-person crew: Madhur Kumar, Sneh Koul, Auryn Macmillan, and Tomas Vrba. They set out to tackle one of Ethereum’s greatest challenges: community consensus.

During the hackathon, they constructed a signalling mechanism: “[It] allows anyone to create a proposal on anything they like and then allows anyone to signal their preference for or against the proposal by sending any amount of ether to the respective receiving address for their preference.”

While still early, it’s a promising potential path forward for the Ethereum community.

Crypto Bingo

Derrick Wilson-Duncan created Crypto Bingo, a lighthearted and fun way to play with your Kitties—but make no mistake, this is not your grandparents’ bingo. Instead, this version fills a board with different Cattributes and challenges players to complete it first for a prize.

Teams presenting their projects

Got a dapp idea of your own?

You don’t need to come to ETHNewYork to build with Dapper or CryptoKitties! The beauty of blockchain is permissionless extensibility, meaning anyone, anywhere can build on to their favourite dapp. If you have an idea, there’s nothing stopping you from making it a reality.

And as always, feel free to reach out to our team—we’ll see you next year at ETHNewYork 2020!
