adaCFC #2 : Nike Grind, the innovation we chose.
Care For Our Cities: We have always been greedy, it’s time to care for our cities. CFC, initiated by three students through the #DareToChallenge project, aims to promote sustainable, 360 recycling programs and information relevant to sustainable cities, starting with Athens. #CareForOurCities
Considering the UN Sustainable Development Goals of our non profitable organization #CareForOurCities, which are “Sustainable Cities and Communities” as well as “Responsible Production and Consumption”, we conducted a research on other projects which are working on the same goals as we do.
An innovation that caught our attention is Nike’s Circular Innovation Challenge. This particular initiative connects with designers, engineers, scientists and makers with the purpose of collecting and recycling footwear. Furthermore, it uses the recycled materials to build running tracks, gum floors and similar surfaces. More specifically, Nike challenged initiators around the world to partner with them in addressing two questions:
How might we create new products using Nike Grind materials? How might we develop new technologies to advance footwear recycling?
Nike Grind is a palette of premium recycled materials recovered from used footwear and manufacturing scrap. To date, Nike Grind materials have been incorporated into more than 1 billion square feet of running tracks, gym floors and other surfaces around the world.
In partnership with OpenIDEO, they sought to inspire the creation of products that improve the lives of the people who use them, while also reducing waste at the same time.
