The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interconnected goals that are intending to create a better and more sustainable future for all. The SDGs were set in 2015 by the United Nations as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

After discussing thoroughly, we came to the conclusion that we all shared the urge to create better working conditions for the youth and help young people to overcome the obstacles that they face when starting their professional “journey”.

The reason we were interested in this issue was that it personally concerned us and we wished to do our part in resolving it. So, we decided to focus on 3 United Nations’ Sustainable Goals in order to start concretizing the idea for our project:

Goal no 4: Quality education

Aims to provide people with quality and easily accessible education and also give them the chance to pursue other learning opportunities. It focuses on creating an inclusive and equal learning environment for everyone where they can acquire knowledge and valuable skills.

Goal no 8: Decent work and economic growth

Aims to promote policies to support job creation and ensure decent work conditions for all women and men, especially young people and people with disabilities. It supports that, at all costs, employees need to be aware of their rights and their ability to claim them and it. Its ultimate objective is to cultivate a culture of mutual respect in the workplace.

Goal no 10: Reduced inequalities

It is targeted to ensure equal opportunities and terminate discrimination. Specifically, in the professional sector, it aims to reduce inequalities of outcome, gender, or educational level, eliminate discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, and promote the enactment of appropriate legislation in order to contribute to the reduction of any kind of discrimination in the workplace.

Using these three sustainable goals as a starting point our aim was -through our project- to improve work conditions amongst youth, reduce inequalities in the workplace, offer young people the opportunity for lifelong learning, and facilitate their access to educational materials and tools.

…and that was only the start of our extraordinary journey!
