The term MIL (Media and information Literacy) has to do with the crucial role of information and media in our lives today. It’s also an approach, which is recently developed by UNESCO and takes into consideration the new cultures of the society of information. UNESCO’s strategy brings together two fields: Information Literacy and Media Literacy — as a couple of capabilities (like knowledge, skills and attitude) necessary for life and work in our days. MIL considers all forms of media and other information providers such as libraries, museums and Internet irrespective of technologies used. So, researchers and librarians world-wide are also contributing to the development of these educational initiatives.

When it comes to our main issue as a team, racism, we see that there are people that still deny the existence of racism and its consequences or even worse some who spread misinformation and fake news around an issue that affects deeply so many people.

Inspired by UNESCO’s Global MIL Week and the 10 ways of MIL Week celebration that the organization proposed, we decided to take action on the social issue that we are focusing on; racism.

We aimed to create an event based on the 1st suggested way of celebration (“Organize a MIL Day”). We organized a MILxAnti-Racism Day in our community by bringing together diverse actors committed to MIL and social issues in general. We wanted to inspire and sensitize people through this event and mobilize them to take action and help us in the fight against racism.

Beyond Race Event will take place at the Onassis Foundation, on November 7, 2020 at 18:00 pm. The event’s goal is to make significant people’s voices heard, like: the Rector of Panteion University, the Officials of the Onassis Foundation who deal with the issue of racism and specifically with the aspects of this phenomenon, the UN ambassador and a various of non-profit organizations such as the European Network Against Racism.

Everyone is welcome to our event, especially the students of Panteion University, people who have their own views on racism and even people who are not accepted by society due to their nationality or other factors.
