As we were walking around the streets of Athens, we came across John. John happened to be a homeless man and unfortunately lives on the streets for the past two years. He decided to share his story with us though. He is in his 50’s and he was recently unemployed. Although he applied to a lot of jobs and went to even more interviews, nobody seemed to be impressed by his abilities. After some time he wasn’t able to pay his bills and later on he was kicked out of the place he rented. John started living in the streets of Athens, on benches and in old buildings.

Over the years John has faced a number of problems with his health, which got much worse when he was sleeping rough. The period he spent sleeping on the streets left him thinner, and increased alcohol use resulted in him sustaining some painful injuries, at times ending up in A & A. We told John that we were starting up an organisation who aims to provide health care to homeless people. We informed him precisely for our work and found out that is keen on improving his physical health . He used to be a painter and decorator and would love to be able to work again.

“I want to get my health back badly.” said john

John also suffers from respiratory infection which makes it difficult for him to sleep, and he has also experienced mental health issues, which got worse while he was sleeping rough:

“I was a bit suicidal…There was nobody to help me.”

When he finally got into hostel accommodation, John managed to visit a doctor. But while he was sleeping rough he didn’t know where to go for help. While staying at a hostel, John was given a treatment but his health went from bad to worse and he needed 6 months to feel better. . .Our organisation’s goal is to help indigent people, provide them with the appropriate medical care and help them overcome their disease as soon as possible.
