We Need Writers
a writer’s rant: the origin of originality? …
Has anyone else noticed how craptacular most new movies are?
I can’t come up with a better description for this predicament.
It seriously can’t be just me.
It is as if originality is in scarce supply or we have exhausted the well of creativity. Or perhaps no one tries anymore.
All I see is sequel after remake after desecration of classic cinematic icons.
The movies that are actually good are based on novels.
Wolf of Wall Street, anyone? (Well a book/true story…)
I was psyched for The Hobbit movies, too. A classic book.
Part One, yeah OK I stayed awake.
Part Two, huge snorefest with a stupid dwarf/elf love story and constant superepic battles of dumbness that made me groan in despair. I know its meganerdy but that part vexed me greatly. I couldn’t stop checking my watch or rolling my eyes
It is being so milked to death that you can read the book quicker than you can watch all three movies!! Way to wipe your ass with a classic, Hollywood.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Fast & Furious franchise lasts longer than the world’s supply of fossil fuel. For Paul Walker’s sake, let it be.
I’ve also heard talk of a Bad Boys III.
Please Hollywood, don’t ruin this one for me too.
Like how Michael Bay took a dump on Transformers.
Or how M. Night Shyamalan deWillSmithified Will Smith in After Earth.
Anyone else would have be a fitting replacement for him in that role.
And I love Will Smith. …I still do, I blame Shyamalan for that steaming pile.
TV shows have now surpassed the cinema in terms of quality, originality and simple viewing pleasure. It’s no surprise one of the biggest hits, Game Of Thrones, is a novel (a series of, whatever) and the other monster, The Walking Dead, a graphic novel (it’s still a “book”).
So it seems apparent to me that the greatest and most important part of any screen production is the writing.
We desperately need more writers.
Better writers.
And we need them now!
