So you’re a marketer and the job comes with an expectation that you are the ‘creative thinker’ — able to turn on the idea hosepipe at any given moment. Let’s be real, that can generate considerable pressure and can cause creative paralysis (Sound familiar? Please continue).

We wanted to share one of the ways we get ‘in the mood’ for a big idea session. Spoiler — it’s our own music.

The scientific community has always had a keen interest in understanding the links between listening to music and ‘divergent thinking’ — one of the core components of creativity.

Divergent thinking — it’s a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions. Often it appears as a spontaneous, free-flowing, “non-linear” stream of consciousness.

That’s right, we’re talking about creating ‘outside-the-box’ ideas (or choose any other cringe-worthy buzz-term for ideation).

To demonstrate our own connection between music and ideas we worked closely with our talented composer Mike Payne, to produce the perfect track to free your minds for flexible thinking.

If you’re looking for your next big idea — this music should get you ready for epic campaign ideation (or at least get the brief written).

It’s a moment to expand your emotional range, allow your neurochemistry to adjust to the task and boost your capacity for divergent thinking.

We called it ‘The Drift’. Give it a try.

(Listen to the full track here.)

Using music to promote a flexible thinking style can lead to unconventional or innovative ideas. Remember — no idea is a bad idea. (Well, some are — but you get the sentiment.)

We’re currently running an experiment using our EEG device to measure emotions and ‘creativity’ before, during and post exposure to music. We’ll provide the results soon.

(P.S. We’re always looking for subjects to work with — drop us your details if you would like to participate in this experiment.)

In the meantime have a listen — let us know how it works for you.
