Jesus: Judge Others…But Only If You Meet The Standard‽
In the world of Christiandom (& beyond) I’ve often heard this phrase “don’t judge” or Christians are not suppose to judge but only love.
That phrase, statement, etcetera is fine with me but apparently not with Jesus Christ.
“Judge not, that ye be not judged.”
“For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. (Matthew 7:1–2)”
Christ apparently expects his disciples to judge but only if they are meeting the standard.
I guess this controversial verse makes sense as it would be silly for an alcoholic to condemn a cocaine addict, or a person struggling with porn to condemn a prostitute, etcetera.
However judging for the sake of judging (like a raging bear) is apparently not what God expects from his disciples:
“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Apostle Paul, Galatians 6:1–2)”
So apparently the point in “judging” is not to boost the ego of the accuser (which means arrogantly approaching someone is not what God desires), but rather to strengthen the individual.
In essence God expects anyone claiming to follow him to approach people with respect (which means publicly tarnishing their dignity is not acceptable).
After all if someone approached me full of “wrath & glory” over a perceived fault, my reaction would probably be between hostile & aggressive.
