The Cost of Discipleship…is High…

Jesus Christ had many followers when he walked upon the earth as a human but he was not interested in creating a massive “fan club.”

Instead he sought out disciples…& demanded a high price for those seeking out the title of disciple of Christ.

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26)

Jesus demands priority over family as well as ones own life in order to be considered his disciple.

This is not an easy commitment as family & self worth are highly valued on planet Earth.

The question that needs to be asked is: am I willing to sacrifice all for Christ’s sake‽

Do I want to be counted as worthy to be called a disciple of Christ‽

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:27)

Am I willing to take punishment in order to be Christ’s disciple‽

Or am I content to merely exist living in the comfortable life while calling myself a “Christian‽”

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:28–33)

Interesting how God compares declaring oneself to being his disciple to building a tower or going to war.

Building a tower is expensive, time consuming & very public (as most people passing by can witness it’s progress).

Starting construction without the means to finish is not only embarrassing but a waste of time & energy.

The same is true in war as only the foolish (with a death wish) declare war without fully understanding the consequences of how devastating the war will be upon them (especially against a larger foe).

So is publicly declaring myself a disciple of Christ yet discovering that I lack the will and faith to see my commitment towards God through to the end — come what may!
