Work Smarter, Not harder Ep.5 Tech and Web3 Job Interviews

I think we all can agree experience makes perfect, and in the fifth episode of Work Smarter, Not Harder we were able to interview Tech veterans within the industry from Web3 and FAANG (“FAANG” is an acronym that refers to the stocks of five prominent American technology companies: Meta (FB) (formerly known as Facebook), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX); and Alphabet (GOOG) (formerly known as Google).

Our guest stars were @oyealmond , Doing Gud community builder and former Facebook talent, and Darshana co-founder and former Microsoft talent Natalie Gil.

They told us that the best advice to get a job in FAANG companies is to do Networking since your contacts are the ones helping you by notifying you to apply early, for example, they train you for the interview process and they also recommend you within the company.

However, they also explained to us where the Web2 and Web3 job application experiences overlap and how they differ.

The FAANG or Web2 interview process:

There are different types of an interview today, however, we can agree that there are always phases within it. In general, phase one is to send your CV or send an introductory email. This phase is preliminary to the first interview.

Tip: Edit your resume specifically for that job and send it to an expert like the Darshana’s team, to take a look at it before sending it.

The second phase can be a preliminary call or a face-to-face interview. This is to get to know you, they usually test your soft skills. You have to show that you are a team player and that you are empathetic and supportive. Beware of strange questions, usually, it is just to test how you handle yourself and behave in different situations.

Here it can also be team interviews with other candidates, and they can test technical knowledge.

The third interview is usually the last, this can be a formality for the team leader to meet you and for the final approval check. Always stay cheerful and with a positive attitude.

Tip: Don’t get discouraged if you didn’t get the job, keep trying. Good vibes only.

Web3 Interview Process:

1. Discord, LinkedIn, Mail, or DM introduction
2. Online interview with the person in charge of recruiting by zoom or meet. Prepare to talk about your previous experience and projects you are currently working on web3. This meeting is about getting to know you and your availability.
3. Online interview with someone else from the team.

Tips:

• Networking is very important, it is not necessary to go to crypto or tech conferences but it is advisable to participate in them.
• Be part of spaces like twitter and discord.
• Collaborate in DAO’s or projects that you like.
• Gain experience and contacts.
• If a project calls you to work with them, negotiate your salary.
• Put your Web3 skills on LinkedIn

Todos podemos coincidir que la experiencia hace al maestro, y el quinto episodio de Work Smarter, Not Harder pudimos entrevistar a veteranas de Tech dentro de la industria de Web3 y FAANG (”FAANG” es un acrónimo que hace referencia a las acciones de cinco destacadas empresas tecnológicas estadounidenses: Meta (FB) (anteriormente conocida como Facebook), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX); y Alphabet (GOOG) (anteriormente conocido como Google).

Nos contaron que el mejor consejo para conseguir un trabajo en compañías FAANG es hacer Networking ya que esta red te avisa para postular temprano, por ejemplo te entrenan para el proceso de entrevista y además te recomiendan dentro de la compañía.

Sin embargo, además nos explicaron dónde coinciden y en cómo difieren las experiencias de postulación de trabajo en Web2 y Web3.

El proceso de entrevista FAANG o Web2:

Hay distintas modalidades de entrevista hoy en día sin embargo, podemos coincidir que siempre hay fases dentro de ella. Por lo general la fase uno es mandar tu CV o enviar un mail de introducción. Esta fase es preliminar para la primera entrevista.

Consejo: Edita tu CV específicamente para ese trabajo y mándaselo a un experto como el equipo de Darshana, para darle un vistazo antes de enviarlo.

La segunda fase puede ser una llamada preliminar o una entrevista presencial. Esta es para conocerte, por lo general ponen a prueba tu soft skills. Tienes que demostrar que eres un jugador en equipo, que eres empático y solidario. Cuidado con preguntas un poco extrañas, por lo general es solo para testear como te manejas y comportas en situaciones distintas.

Acá también puede ser entrevistas en equipo con otros candidatos, y pueden poner a prueba conocimiento técnico.

La tercera entrevista por lo general es la última, esta puede ser una formalidad para que el jefe del equipo te conozca y del último check de aprobación. Mantente siempre alegre y con una actitud positiva.

Consejo: no te desalientes si no conseguiste el trabajo, sigue intentando. Buen animo.

Proceso de entrevista Web3:

1. Discord, LinkedIn, Mail, o DM de introducción.
2. Entrevista online por Zoom o Meet . Conoces a la persona encargada de reclutar. Te pide experiencia y proyectos. Te quiere conocer a ti y saber tu disponibilidad.
3. Entrevista online con alguien más del equipo.

Consejos:

• Es muy importante el Networking, no es necesario ir a conferencias crypto o tech pero recomendable participar en ellos.
• Se parte de espacios como twitter y discord.
• Colabora en DAO’s o proyectos que te gusten.
• Gana experiencia y contactos.
• Si algún proyecto te llama para trabajar con ellos negocia tu salario.
• Pon tus Web3 skills en LinkedIn
