PESO: Improving Email with AI

Let’s face it, navigating your email is hard. Whoever you are — whether you’re a student, a professor, or even the owner of a new startup — it is impossible to find everything that you need in your inbox when important emails are being drowned out by unimportant ones. Missing out on an email from a professor or employer not only makes you look incompetent but also affects your mental health. The anxiety formed from constantly refreshing your inbox, scrolling through to make sure you saw what you needed to see, responded to what you needed to respond to — when does it end?

That’s where we step in. Enter PESO, a Chrome extension with the power to change how you interact with email. By optimizing the email experience, you can spend more time focusing on what you need to do rather than searching for it in an ocean of emails. We show you which emails need your attention, allowing you to focus on these and come back to other emails later. Had a rough day and didn’t get the opportunity to go through your inbox? PESO’s got you. We give you a newsletter every morning with the most important emails from the previous day, allowing you to get a head start on your priorities.

The main features of PESO include:

• An email prioritization algorithm based on your habits and email usage
• Our PESO recap newsletter sends you your most important emails from the previous day
• Our Autoresponse feature allows you to draft a response to traditional emails

Taken together, our extension’s features alleviate much of the stress associated with everyday email usage. After clicking our PESO extension button, we start working in the background to mark things that are relevant to you and you alone.

Other services that attempt to prioritize e-mails do so using a very surface-level approach, such as checking to see whether or not an email has been sent to you or a group of addresses to determine whether or not it is important. This is where we separate ourselves. By analyzing various features, some of which include the email content, and who it was sent from, our algorithm learns a user’s habits and tendencies to reply to certain emails.

Say an email ends up with the wrong label. PESO’s got that covered — simply tag that email with a Prioritize or Deprioritize label, and the next time PESO runs through your inbox, the email that you tagged will be prioritized accordingly.

We don’t stop there. Based on this now prioritized inbox, we then send out daily newsletters containing your top 5 most important emails. In this newsletter, users can see snippets of the emails and click on links taking them directly to the email.

Our goal is to completely revolutionize how email is used. To do that, we couldn’t stop at prioritizing emails — we also added another feature to allow users to generate responses to traditional emails, our PESO Autoresponse. Getting a lot of the same emails and tired of replying to every one of them? We’ve got you. Users have the option to click our Autoresponse button and generate a response to a given email, allowing them to edit it however they want before they hit send.

Impact

As students who were tired of having important emails drowned out by fluff, we know firsthand how useful a tool like PESO can be. We immediately understood that this problem is not something exclusive to college students, but something that afflicted all types of people. The problem instead lay within the core of the email system, which was conducive to increased stress and decreased productivity. Through our product, we hope to provide a tool that allows our users to interact with their emails without the anxiety and worry surrounding missing something important. We hope to keep this extension available on the Chrome store shortly so as many users as possible have the opportunity to use our product.
