Unlocking Cross-Chain Potential: Darwinia Community’s Pioneering Build OP Stack Layer2 with AltLayer and Avail
We are thrilled to unveil the project that we’ve been diligently working on in recent weeks. Crab SubDAO, one of the most innovative DAO members in Darwinia Network, is planning to construct an Ethereum Rollup Layer 2, utilizing the AltLayer service, with Avail serving as the data availability layer. This marks a significant milestone in bringing Darwinia network’s cross-chain functionalities to the Ethereum community, showcasing our commitment to enhancing interoperability within the blockchain space.
Darwinia has distinguished itself as one of the pioneering networks within the Polkadot ecosystem, dedicating several years to developing secure and efficient cross-chain messaging protocols. Our journey began with the creation of the first-ever token bridge connecting a substrate chain to Ethereum. Following that success, we evolved our foundational cross-chain protocol to facilitate message exchanges between two substrate chains. Our latest innovation is the all-in-one messaging service for EVM DApps, Msgport, designed to endow applications with cross-chain capabilities with minimal overhead. This journey has been a fascinating and insightful experience for us. Encouraged by our progress and the lessons learned, we are now set to broaden our horizons even further. We aim to extend our current cross-chain infrastructures into the largest blockchain ecosystem in the world — Ethereum. This strategic move is a testament to our commitment to enhancing interoperability and unlocking new possibilities for blockchain applications across diverse ecosystems.
We’re excited to share our collaboration with AltLayer, a leading Rollup-as-a-Service (RaaS) provider. Together, we’ve harnessed their versatile services to develop a stable and secure Op Stack rollup testnet, with Avail DA — a cutting-edge solution in the realm of blockchain data services. This integration not only capitalizes on the Ethereum-compatible capabilities of the Op Stack but also significantly reduces transaction costs for our users. This makes our rollup a competitively cost-efficient alternative within the rollup landscape. Looking ahead, there’s potential for this rollup to become an integral part of the Superchain, unlocking even greater cross-chain capabilities through Darwinia’s advanced messaging protocols.

The testnet is now open to the public, and we invite you to explore it at Darwinia Op Testnet Information. We welcome users from the ecosystem to participate and engage with our network. Moving forward, we will be conducting extensive testing on this rollup. Our goal is to integrate Darwinia’s existing cross-chain protocol, such as Msgport, to facilitate message exchanges between the rollup and the broader blockchain universe. This will pave the way for the creation of innovative applications that leverage these cross-chain interactions.
