Hacksaw Ridge is a film based on the true story of Desmond Doss who was the first to win a medal of honor without firing a shot. When he was drafted, Doss had to push through fellow soldiers ostracizing him for refusing to bare arms in order to gain respect. Doss later showed his bravery and compassion for his country as he risked his life to save 75 men in the battle of Okinawa without firing a shot. This movie is based on true events that have happened in the battle of Okinawa and other things that were going on during the time of the war.

Director of Hacksaw Ridge Mel Gibson is a well known actor and director for several movies. Gibson often acts and directs in movies that involves a character who is persecuted, and fights for justice; a movie such as Hacksaw Ridge is one of these films. This film is the first he has directed since the film Apocalypto ten years ago. Gibson did an excellent job at portraying the environment of war. The courage, physical and mental strength, compassion, and determination all play a role in this movie, and it helps viewers picture what war actually looks like.

The special effects, wardrobe, set, and location all play a role in making of the movie that also help a viewer see what it is like during the time of the battle. Whether it’s during the battle or back at home, this movie makes you feel like you have been set back in time. All of these factors have hit the nail on the head. During battle, the special effects add to the idea of what these soldiers go through; the bombs, explosions, gunshots all add into this factor. The wardrobe helps portray the time difference between now and then, and the location of the movie shows the viewer what the battle field looked like.

Hacksaw Ridge is a definite must see whether you enjoy action movies or not. Along with any other war movie that is based on a true story, this film really helps you put into perspective all that our soldiers put on the line for us. They risk so much for us, and this film excels in showing what they go through. It’s not just an action movie though for those of you who are reluctant to watch it; it also shares a love story in it as well. Hacksaw Ridge is an extraordinary film.
