Throughout the previous two years, the spread of COVID-19 has come in never-ending up and down cycles. For the past few months, cases have been subsiding as the roll-out of booster shots begin. Metro Manila has steadily remained at Alert Level 1 and with this, lockdown restrictions have been loosening up. However, this does not mean that the battle against COVID-19 is over.

Experts from the independent OCTA research group are predicting that the number of new cases may peak by the first or second week of July. According to data from the Department of Health (DOH), from June 20 to July 3, the daily average cases increased by 60 percent from the previous week, with about 1,057 new cases per day.

Current Preventive Measures

Now more than ever, preventive measures are crucial to halt the surge as quickly as possible. Some surges have been worse than others but every wave has taken countless lives. To truly combat the volatile nature of the virus, innovation and efficiency in our healthcare systems is a must.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to slow down the spread of the virus and to protect ourselves from infection is through contact tracing. Simply put, contact tracing is performed by notifying individuals who have come into close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Many establishments in the Philippines have their own contact tracing protocols in place. While this may work as a quick solution, the lack of a consistent and integrated national system makes tracking the spread of the virus inefficient for labs, establishments, and individuals. Not to mention that switching from system to system adds to the confusion and inconvenience of users.
