Review of novel by Andy Weir

For me the drama was dull — racing to save both mankind and an alien life form from total destruction. Same old, same old. While the technical detail left me puzzled, the humorous irony kept me reading. And the way the author dealt with the challenge of communicating with a totally alien life form was both fascinating and credible, as was the growing bond of friendship between Ryland and Rocky (the alien).

Memorable passages:
— “I’m terrified just thinking about it. And it’s not just sudden terror. It’s a cozy, comfortable terror with a permanent seat at the table. I’ve felt it for a long time. p. 26
— “Ánother day, another staff meeting. Who would have thought saving the world could be so boring?” p. 232
— “It’s hard to find two climatologists who agree on the color of an orange. It is, unfortunately, an inexact field.” p. 233
