Each week the D4D community gets a newsletter detailing events and announcements going on in the community. 2018 is already shaping up to be a busy and exciting year. If you are not yet a member, come join 2700+ volunteers who are using data science skills to do tech for good.

Some highlights from January are:

The Worlds First Community Driven Data Science Code of Ethics

Data For Good Exchange SF

Team Lead Natalie Evans Harris

Since September 2017, we have been hard at work developing the first ever community-driven data science code of ethics for responsible data sharing in partnership with Bloomberg and BrightHive. On Feb 6th, we will come together over Slack, Twitter, and in San Francisco to create the initial draft and we need help from the entire data science community to get the word out. Help us make history by sharing the social post below promoting our work with your own networks.

Data for Democracy is joining with SocialWorks to help millennial voters navigate the election space.

“Chicago non-profit SocialWorks is partnering with Data for Democracy on [Parade to the Polls] to build a data tool for making election issues transparent and easy to access. The goal of the project is to rephrase elections in terms of issues instead of presenting voters a with binary choice…”

data.World + Tableau for Black History Month

data.world logo

data.world is working with Tableau to organize a series of virtual activities around Black History Month in February. The idea is to use datasets to tell a story around a theme, and Data for Democracy has been asked to participate!

This is in the early stages, and more info will be shared as it becomes available.

New Projects: #lobbyist-blacklist and #Magnifai

#lobbyist-blacklist which came from #fcc-net-neutrality project.

“…we have the beginnings of a database of ‘blacklisted’ stolen IDs. The idea is to compile a database of compromised IDs, and identify which campaigns the stolen ID was used in.”

#magnifai which aims to help nonprofits leverage their data.

“We’d appreciate any help (we’re 100% volunteer) and exposure (most orgs don’t even know what they can do with their data, let alone shop around for DS assistance)”

We welcome community members from all kinds of backgrounds and skills to work together on projects that make a difference. If you like what you see, join us and help make a difference.

Thanks!

We are so grateful for all the volunteers who have put so much time and effort into making this community work. We remain inspired by the work that is being done in this community; thank you for all the amazing work that you’ve done and for continuing to collaborate on more projects. We can’t wait to see what D4D accomplishes next!

Over and out,
