Where could dogs run?
As a dog owner who lives in Midtown West, I often find it hard to find an off-leash area for my dog to run freely that is within walking distance and/or large green space that is dog-friendly.
The digital twin choose NYC open data on how many dog run parks are there around midtown west as of Apr. 29, 2019.
The visualization shows that amongst the midtown west area that includes both Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea neighborhood, there is only one designated dog run park located at Pier 84 — that is, one out of 1,000 acre. However, even that one and only park could not be conveniently accessed by foot — the most accessible area for pedestrians/dog walkers are the area covered in brighter yellow.
As a city that has relatively higher dog-ownership rate, the spaces for our four-legged friend to run is pretty limited, and needs further development.
