Proposal :
- Simulating The Process and Result of A Borough’s Growth
- We believe that there is a pattern in NY boroughs’ growth that leads to waves of gentrification with little cooperation of the existing condition. The process attracts different mix of people / population density, yet also forces out existing residents and business that couldn’t keep up with the development that lends the borough’s current state. So, to prevent homogenization and to simulate a balance, we believe that the existing fabric and new development should work hand in hand in all scales. We hope that we can learn about simulating the growth of a borough by experimenting on finding a balance between the existing fabric and the new development to create a rich ‘system’.
Agents :
- Block
- Street
- Parks
- Building — height, width, function
- Traffic — vehicles, traffic lights, highway
- Land price, real estate price
- People — 1st generation : artists, college students, and existing residents (poor), 2nd generation : mid income worker, hip restaurants, startups, 3rd generation : corporate, expensive retails, restaurants
- Train stops
- Waste *
Environment : 40 blocks. ( Mid Town Borough)
Time : 10 year period
- Building : Behavior : as land price goes up, more taller building developments
- Traffic : Behavior : as more buildings and more mix of programs, more traffic congestion and introduction of metro system
- People : Behavior : as land price goes up, existing residents either stay or leave and new generations of people coming
- Growth of neighborhood. Influence of land and rent price influence a new dense environment
